Early papers consist of a letter from "Dunbar" to George Mathews concerning the falsification of dates of land surveys (1797); bills for merchandise; a contract between the Bayou Boeuf and Red River Navigation Company and Levi Wilson (1836); an inventory and appraisal of the estate of George Mathews (1837). Papers (1840-1860) chiefly pertain to Harriet Mathews and her son, Charles L. Mathews and document activities on the Greenwood, Chaseland, Coco Bend, and Georgia plantations. Letters from Joseph Ivor discuss land values and politics in East Baton Rouge Parish. Civil War letters contain requests from relatives and friends for financial assistance and supplies. Letters from Samuel Meeker at Camp Pickens, Virginia, discuss skirmishes and illnesses in camp. Letters of the Reconstruction period concern planting, labor problems with freedmen working on plantations, and the difficulty of maintaining land holdings. Printed items include broadsides, clippings, and promotional materials.

Charles Lewis Mathews (1824-1864) was the son of Judge George Mathews (1774-1836), justice of the Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans (1806-1813) and the Supreme Court of Louisiana (1813-1836), and Harriet Flower Mathews. His grandfather was General George Mathews (1739-1812), who fought in the Revolutionary War. Charles L.
